Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Relative, Business, Military Nationality: United States Executive summary: Conservative leader against New Deal Military service: US Army (WWI and WWII) Archie Roosevelt was the third son of US President Theodore Roosevelt, and as a boy he made headlines walking on stilts in the White House, and once slid down a banister interrupting a state dinner. As a young man he served with distinction in World War I, then took an executive post with Sinclair Oil. At Sinclair, his name was linked to the ensuing Teapot Dome scandal, although the evidence against him was insignificant. During the Presidency of his cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt, Archie Roosevelt was an outspoken critic of New Deal programs. In World War II he volunteered to return to the Army, and became the allied forces' oldest battalion commander.
After WWII he founded a brokerage firm, and achieved his greatest fame as a prominent voice of the anti-communist movement. A founding member of the John Birch Society, he publicly accused President Harry S. Truman of shielding Reds, and campaigned to block Robert Oppenheimer, whom he criticized as anti-patriotic, from teaching at Harvard. He later joined Alcoholics Anonymous, and receded from public life after his wife was killed in a 1971 auto accident in which he was driving.
