Nixon wondered in 1971 whether his efforts were being undermined by a "Jewish cabal" operating inside the Bureau of Labor Statistics, he personally directed Fred Malek to compile a list of high-ranking Jews working there. Malek's report on the inquiry concluded:

During the following two months, Malek had at least four of the people on his list demoted, according to a memo he sent to White House Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman. It was the last known officially-sanctioned act of anti-Semitism by the United States government.
