Corral Military service: 83rd Illinois Infantry (1862-65) Virgil Earp was a brother of Wyatt and Morgan Earp, and was town marshal of Tombstone, Arizona at the time of the famed gunfight at Tombstone's O.K. Corral, on 26 October 1881. He was shot in the leg in the gunfight, and then shot again and crippled for life on 28 December 1881, presumably in revenge for the deaths of Billy Clanton and Frank and Tom McLaury at the O.K. Corral. His assailant was never conclusively identified, but one Frank Stilwell was seen running from the scene of the crime. Stilwell was killed on 20 March 1882, when he was shot by Earp's brother Wyatt or by family friend Doc Holliday.
