Executive summary: Openly gay SF city supervisor Military service: US Navy (Korean War, 1951-55, Lt. jg) Given the unfortunate nickname Glimpy Milch -- derived from his appearance and the name of his Lithuanian grandfather -- Milk was born Harvey Bernard Milk in Long Island. As an openly gay candidate, he was elected to San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, a position he held until he and popular Mayor George Moscone were shot to death by former policeman and city supervisor Dan White. After White was convicted of a much lesser charge than murder ("twinkie defense"), an enraged populace of San Francisco erupted in the "White Night Riot". The despondent White later committed suicide.
