The firm established offices in Berlin, London, Paris, St. Petersburg, and other major cities, soon became the dominant player in global telegraphy.
As much a scientist as an industrialist, Siemens also researched the atmosphere, invented an electroplating process for gold and silver, pioneered the dynamo-electric principle, designed the first electric elevator, and was the first cablemaker to use gutta-percha latex as an insulating agent for telegraph wire -- a breakthrough which allowed Trans-Atlantic telegraph cables to be laid.
