Executive summary: Congressman from Pennsylvania, 1987-2007 Curt Weldon was a school teacher and volunteer firefighter before he was elected mayor of Marcus Hook borough in Pennsylvania, in 1977. He was later a member of the Delaware County Council. He ran for the US House in 1984 and lost, then ran again in 1986 and was elected to Congress from Pennsylvania's 7th District. As a Republican, he advocates conservative positions on most issues, and he serves on the Armed Services Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee.
In 2004, Weldon was reported to have attended cultist kook Sun Myung Moon's "coronation" at the Senate Office Building in Washington DC. At the ceremony, Moon wore a king-like robe and had himself literally crowned "none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent." Weldon at first denied attending the bizarre event, claiming that he had been elsewhere at the time. It was later revealed, though, that he was co-chair of the ceremony, and photographs of the event showed Weldon delivering a speech and later pinning a medal on Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, who also attended.
In 2005, Weldon released a high-profile book titled Countdown to Terror, describing the dangers to America posed by Iran. According to Weldon's book, terrorists backed by Iran planned to attack the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station near Boston, and Iran was hiding Osama bin Laden, funding the Sunni resistance in Iraq, and constructing a nuclear weapon aimed at Washington DC. Weldon's un-named but "impeccable clandestine source" for all this information was later revealed to be Fereidoun Mahdavi, Iran's former Minister of Commerce under the Shah. Mahdavi's name rang a bell for Iran-Contra figure Lt Oliver North, who had dealt with him in the 1980s and described him as "a liar". Bud McFarlane, National Security Advisor under Ronald Reagan, called Mahdavi "one of the most despicable characters I have ever met".
In 2006, Weldon's support in the Armed Services Committee was instrumental in awarding a $1.6-billion contract for construction of a new Presidential helicopter to AgustaWestland, an Italian-owned company with a manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania. About six months before the contract was awarded, Weldon's daughter Kim was hired to provide public relations support for AgustaWestland.
Weldon's son Andrew is a race car driver whose team's largest sponsor is Schaffer Motorsports, owned by Tom Schaffer, a senior executive at Boeing. Schaffer was involved with Boeing's MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft project, which Weldon saved in Congress several times, even as it went billions of dollars over budget and the project was vehemently opposed by then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. The largest financial supporters of Weldon's campaigns have been the defense and aerospace industries, and the Boeing Corporation is his largest single campaign donor.
Weldon's daughter Karen left her career at Boeing to open a lobbying firm that immediately attracted well-heeled clients, including two Serbian businessmen linked to accused war criminal Slobodan Milosevic who paid her $20,000 each month to help them acquire a US visa. Another client was a Russian energy company that paid $40,000 a month for "public-relations help". In 2006, the FBI raided Weldon's daughter's home, and the home of Charles P.
