Gender: Male Religion: Christian Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Business Nationality: United States Executive summary: Founder of Scott Paper Company E. Irvin Scott and his brother, T. Seymour Scott, began selling butcher paper from pushcarts in 1867, and they later had an unsuccessful storefront operation as Seymour Scott & Bro. In 1879 Irvin Scott borrowed $2,000 from his father-in-law to establish a new venture, the Scott Paper Company, with his younger brother Clarence. The company sold paper bags, stationery, and wrapping paper, and by the mid-1890s Scott was the nation's leading manufacturer of toilet tissue. Due to the prevailing social standards of decency, however, the brothers did not want their company's name to be associated with toilet paper, so they sold it to hundreds of drug stores and other businesses, which re-sold it under different brand names.
When Scott's son, Arthur Hoyt Scott, took an active position with the company at the turn of the century, he argued that since toilet tissue was the company's best-selling product, it should be sold under Scott's own brand. Scott's toilet tissue was introduced in 1902, and the company's first paper towels were introduced in 1907, sold only to hotels, restaurants, and schools, and marketed as an effective means to prevent the spread of disease on rolled cloth towels in restrooms. Scott introduced paper towels for home use in 1931, a few months before Irvin Scott's death.
After their first venture's collapse, Irvin Scott's older brother, T. Seymour Scott, became managing editor of the Curtis Publishing Company, publisher of the Saturday Evening Post and Ladies' Home Journal.
