Gender: Male Religion: Atheist Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Physicist, Mathematician Nationality: United States Executive summary: Many Worlds Theory of quantum physics Mathematician and theorist Hugh Everett III studied under John Archibald Wheeler, and proposed in 1957 the "many-worlds" interpretation for quantum physics, wherein infinite parallel alternate universes are endlessly splitting apart. When he was 12, he wrote a letter to Albert Einstein, asking what binds the universe, and Einstein briefly replied. Everett studied at Catholic University, but became a long-time atheist, and claimed to have scientifically disproved the Christian religion. He believed that the implications of "many worlds" ensured immortality for all humans, and per his request, after his death in 1982 Everett's ashes were dumped in the trash. His daughter Liz killed herself in 1997, and left a note explaining that in death she would be reunited with her father in a parallel universe. His son Mark Oliver Everett, performing as 'E', is the lead singer for the rock band Eels. Hugh Everett's college girlfriend, Karen Kruse, was a science fiction writer who later married Poul Anderson.
