Goenawan Mohammad AKA Goenawan Susatyo Mohammad Born: 29-Jul-1941 Birthplace: Batang, Indonesia
Gender: Male Religion: Muslim Race or Ethnicity: Asian/Indian Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Journalist, Poet, Activist Nationality: Indonesia Executive summary: Muckraking Indonesian journalist Goenawan Mohammad is an internationally-known human rights activist, and the founder and longtime editor of Indonesia's Tempo weekly news magazine. His pithy column in Tempo, "Catatan Pinggir" ("Sidelines"), always ends with a political or philosophical question for the reader to ponder. For the magazine's persistent reporting of government corruption and suppression, Mohammad has been harassed and Tempo has been closed twice by the Indonesian government, for two months in 1984, and for four years beginning in 1994.
His parents were held in an internment camp in the 1920s for suspected involvement in a left-wing nationalist movement, and his father was arrested and executed for political activism in 1947. Deemed a "counter-revolutionary" by the ruling Communists, Mohammed fled Indonesia and lived in Belgium for several years in his 20s. Before being drawn into politics and journalism for three decades, he was a respected poet, and he has said he is "not really an activist", but was forced into activism by his desire to read and write freely. He is co-founder of the Lontar Foundation, an Indonesian writers' group, and his name has been mentioned as a possible Nobel laureate.
