Born Jean-Marie Maurice Scherer, he worked as a reporter in his early 20s, and during the occupation of France he wrote a novel, Elizabeth, under the pseudonym "Gilbert Cordier". By the end of the 1940s he was working as a film critic, and calling himself Eric Rohmer. Eventually he became editor of Cahiers du Cinema, but by the late 1950s he had turned his attention to making short films. His first feature film was 1959's La Signe du Lion (The Sign of Leo).

Generally weak on plot and long on conversation, Rohmer's films are not for everyone, but his "morality tales", romantic comedies, and chamber dramas have been praised by many critics and appreciated by art-house audiences. In his most famous film, Ma Nuit chez Maud (My Night at Maud's), a Catholic man, his Marxist friend, and a divorcee spend the night in her apartment, discusing philosophy, religion, and Pascal's wager. His other acclaimed films include Four Aventures de Reinette et Mirabelle (Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle), La Femme de L'Aviateur (The Aviator's Wife), and Le Rayon vert (The Green Ray).

Mainstream American audiences may know Rohmer only for a passing mention of his name in the 1975 thriller Night Moves. In that film, Gene Hackman's jaded private eye character jokes, "I saw a Rohmer film once. It was kind of like watching paint dry."
