Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Occupation: Scientist Nationality: United States Executive summary: Director, National Hurricane Center, 2007 Proenza was reprimanded by Mary Glackin, Acting Director of the National Weather Service, after making public (though entirely true) statements to the press regarding the deplorable state of the QuikScat satellite. Loss of the QuikScat, launched in 1999 to measure wind-speed, would mean a 16% decrease in the ability to forecast where hurricanes would strike the United States. The satellite has exceeded its life expectancy and no replacement is in the wings. On 13 April 2007 he was warned by NWS official Louis Uccellini, "You better stop these QuikScat [and other] complaints. I'm warning you. You have NOAA, DOC and the White House pissed off."
