Anne Morgan was the youngest child of the wealthy financier J. Pierpont Morgan, who once described her as "the woman who runs me". Raised among bankers and ambassadors, she received the most expensive education available, and she inherited $3M at her father's death in 1913, when that was still considered a vast sum. As a young woman she spent much of her leisure in Paris, but she was also an effective albeit soft-spoken advocate for women's rights. She was a long-time president of the American Woman's Association, and with literary agent Elisabeth Marbury and socialite Elsie De Wolfe she established New York's Colony Club, the first all-women's club to rival such men's groups as the Knickerbocker Club or Down Town Association.

The same three ladies co-owned a villa in France, where they became famous as high society hostesses. During World War I Morgan established the American Fund for French Wounded, which after the war evolved into the American Friends for Devastated France. For her relief work for France after World War I, she became the first American woman appointed a commander of the French Legion of Honor. She also spearheaded efforts to rebuild France after World War II. She never married. Decades after her death, her four-story mansion on Manhattan's East Side was donated to the United Nations, and it is now the UN Secretary General's official residence.
