P. Morgan & Co. J. P. Morgan, Jr. was the son of one of America's wealthiest men, J. Pierpont Morgan. He attended Harvard, then took executive posts at his father and grandfather's banking firms. At his father's death in 1913, he inherited millions and became President of J. P. Morgan & Co. His biggest contribution to the family fortune came when his company was awarded an exclusive contract as munitions purchasing agent for the British government during World War I. He also organized a syndicate of more than 2,000 banks to underwrite war loans to Allied governments totaling more than half-a-billion dollars. He fought furiously against Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal during the Depression, and secured about $100M in loans to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
Morgan was shot twice on 3 July 1915 by an intruder in his Long Island mansion, ostensibly in protest of his profiteering from war, but Morgan quickly recovered from his wounds. He donated $100,000 to the American Legion, and in 1924 he endowed the grounds and collection of his father's library, creating what is now the Morgan Library & Museum. His son, Henry S. Morgan, was a founder of Morgan Stanley, and his sister Anne Morgan was a noted philanthropist.
