Nick Nolte AKA Nicholas King Nolte Born: 8-Feb-1941 Birthplace: Omaha, NE
Gender: Male Religion: Roman Catholic Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Actor Nationality: United States Executive summary: 48 Hours Nick Nolte is at his best playing troubled eccentrics, or tough characters with or without a heart of gold. He has had a long big-screen career, in films from 48 Hrs with Eddie Murphy to Martin Scorsese's third of New York Stories, from Down and Out in Beverly Hills to Streisand's The Prince of Tides.
In college he played football, but ended up dropping out of four different schools. In 1962 he was convicted of selling counterfeit draft cards, and given a 45 years prison sentence, which the judge mercifully suspended. Nolte spent the next decade on probation, and became interested in acting when a friend took him to a local staging of Arthur Miller's Death of A Salesman.
After several years on stage, building from small to leading roles in many, many local plays, Nolte's big break came with playwright William Inge's suicide. The famed author of Bus Stop and Splendor in the Grass took his own life on the opening night of Nolte's appearance in Inge's last play, The Last Pad, in Los Angeles. Of course, the suicide rattled everyone involved with the play, but it also sold a lot of tickets. The play got lots of attention, and Nolte got great reviews that led to TV work, and eventually to the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man, which made him a star at 35. After doing many films for the money, he made a conscious decision in the mid-1990s to make only films he gave a damn about, films that "carry a moral jolt" or address "serious issues". For the past decade, Nolte has rarely worked in big-budget films, instead becoming a staple of small, independent films.
On the set of 1984's Grace Quigley with the legendary Katharine Hepburn, she berated Nolte for his perpetual drunkenness. He was long known as a heavy drinker and a constant user of recreational drugs. He seemed to clean up his act in the mid-1990s. Then, around the turn of the millennium, he became a health enthusiast, downing dozens of vitamin pills daily, monitoring his own blood under microscopes in his home, and studying all the information he could get about nutritional science.
In September 2002, he was arrested for driving under the influence of GHB. The arresting officer's report notes that Nolte was "completely out of it. He was drooling, [with] droopy eyes". Nolte's lawyer said he had ingested the drug unwittingly, as part of a "weight-lifting concoction". In 2004, Nolte was sued over the rape of a 15-year-old girl at his house, reportedly involving the drug GHB. Nolte was not home at the time, but was sued for negligence by the girl's parents, who allege that Nolte should have been "aware of the propensity" of a live-in security guard to provide "alcohol and/or drugs to minor children".
When he can't squirm out of doing publicity interviews, Nolte likes to show up in pajamas. Some of his best tales, though, are from the actor's imagination. For years, he has routinely lied to reporters whenever interviews begin to bore him. Nolte's best fiction includes the story of falling from a roof when he was ten and being impaled through the groin; undergoing cosmetic surgery on his testicles, living for several years in a Mexican brothel, misplacing his father's artificial leg in a tavern, and being functionally illiterate until his twenties.
