He built this into a thriving concern employing several hundred workers. In the 1950s he joined Gorton's Seafood, where he climbed the management ladder to become CEO. At Gorton's, Kinney introduced the novel product of frozen fish sticks to the world. General Mills acquired Gorton's in 1968, of which Kinney became CEO in 1977. Under Kinney's management, General Mills went from $1B in sales to over $5B. He retired in 1982, serving on numerous corporate boards as well as that of his alma mater, Bates College.
