J. Newberry five-and-dime store in 1911, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. From the 1930s to the 1960s the Newberry chain was among America's retail powerhouses, competing with the likes of Woolworth and S. S. Kresge Co. for the discount market. Newberry, the company's namesake, died in 1954. His five-and-dime chain's peak came in the early 1960s, when Newberry Company had 565 stores in 45 American states and Canada, with annual sales of $291M. The company was sold to Rapid-American Corporation in 1972, merged with another subsidiary called McCrory Stores, and dwindled over subsequent decades. The last J. J. Newberry store, in Portland, Oregon, was closed in 2001. McCrory Corporation and its owner, Riklis Family Corporation, still operate numerous dollar store and discount chains.
