Burnside Became a blues guitarist after hearing John Lee Hooker's work, and, while playing since he was a teenager, he did not make his first recording until 1967. He moved to Chicago in the 1950s but returned to Mississippi in 1959 after both his brother and uncle were murdered there. Other important musical influences include his close friend Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Muddy Waters (married to his first cousin). A 1991 documentary, Deep Blues, produced by Dave Stewart, gave him substantial exposure. His albums (on which he tends to play electric, not acoustic, guitar) are dirty and tend to the misogynistic.
