Evidently he played a key role in securing the Vice President nomination for Harry S. Truman in 1944. After FDR died, Truman came to rely on Biffle for information regarding goings-on in the Senate. There was a dedicated phone line between the two men's desks. During one press conference, Truman declared: "They don't make them any better than Biffle. And you can quote me on that."
When Biffle died in 1966, Senator John L. McClellan announced it on the floor of the US Senate, mourning the loss of a "true patriot and one of America's finest citizens."
