Operating out of a small office at 58 Wall Street in New York City, the company was chartered by the state of New York to issue fire, marine and inland navigation insurance, but soon began offering insurance policies on the lives of free men and slaves. The firm sold 449 life insurance policies during the three years that Ogden was President, and by good fortune no policy-holders died during that time.
