Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Occupation: Military Nationality: Croatia Executive summary: Croatian war criminal Military service: French Foreign Legion (Chief Corporal, 1973-78); Croatian Army After service in a parachute regiment of the French Foreign Legion starting in the 1970s, Gotovina returned to Croatia in 1991 and joined the Army "Tiger" brigade, eventually rising to the position of full general in 1995. Believed to have participated in the killing of 150 Serbian civilians, as well as the displacement of 150,000 others, during ethnic cleansing of Croatia. In 2003 the US Government offered a reward of up to $5M for his capture. Gotovina was indicted in 2001 by The Hague War Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity, but he remained a fugitive until his arrest at Tenerife in the Canary Islands in December 2005. Many in Croatia consider him a national hero.
