Sang with the Kay Kyser Big Band 1938-49, whose hits with Babbitt include The White Cliffs of Dover, On a Slow Boat to China, and The Umbrella Man. He is also well remembered for a recording of All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth. Perhaps more famous was his laugh, which was used as the trademark voice of Woody Woodpecker.

Babbitt retired in 1964 and became a real estate agent, but returned to the business in 1985 after Kyser's death, puchasing the band's back catalog from Kyser's widow and toured for about a decade.
