Trotter, Priest of Music (1995), pp. 394-96 discusses this at some length, concluding that Mitropoulos was gay but largely celibate, though with a reputation quite the opposite: "Here was a bitter justice indeed: the more Mitroopoulos behaved like a celibate hermit, the more imaginary sins were attributed to him. He and [Maxim] Gershunoff discussed the problem one time, and Mitropoulos lamented: What a pity that I am condemned for luxuries I do not have the time to afford!"
