Chris Squire AKA Christopher Russel Edward Squire Born: 4-Mar-1948 Birthplace: Kingsbury, London, England Died: 27-Jun-2015 Location of death: Phoenix, AZ Cause of death: Cancer - Leukemia
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Bassist Nationality: England Executive summary: Bassist for Yes Chris Squire spent the mid 1960s in a series of London-based beat acts before becoming involved in Mabel Greer's Toyshop, a band that also featured the guitar talents of Peter Banks. In 1968 singer Jon Anderson was introduced into the ranks and the Toyshop quickly evolved into Yes. Fueled by a high standard of musicianship and an adventurous approach to form, and aided by early exposure given by popular British DJ John Peel, Yes went on the become one of the preeminent British rock bands during the 1970s. A constantly changing line-up plagued the band from its beginning, but Squire remained the one constant throughout the floowing decades.
The first personnel change came in 1970 when Banks, unhappy with the the musical direction the band was taking, either quit or was kicked out, depending on who you ask. Resentment over Squire's large feet may also have been a factor. Banks was replaced by Steve Howe, and after this point the band's popularity began to take off, earning them stadium-sized audiences by the middle of the decade. By the close of the 70s, however, the fortunes of Yes were on the wane, the only complete disintegration of the band taking place in 1981. Squire and drummer Alan White began work on a tentative project involving guitarist Jimmy Page, but when that failed to materialize the two instead enlisted the fingers of Trevor Rabin and formed the band Cinema in 1982. Anderson took an interest in the development of Cinema, joined up, and inevitably Yes was resurrected. It has remained in existence (though not necessarily active) ever since.
Of all the Yes alumni, Chris Squire was the least active beyond the confines of the band. Only one record under his own name was released -- 1975's Fish out of Water -- as well as one collaborative single with White in 1981 and a collaborative record with Billy Sherwood, released to little fanfare in 2000. In 1987, production and vocal help was given to the first record by his former wife's band, Esquire.
