He joined the Communist Party after serving in the Red Army in the first World War and its aftermath. He further became involved with Comintern in the 1920s-30s during his stay in the Soviet Union. Nagy served as Prime Minister 1953-55 but was forced to resign when it became clear he was too much of a maverick. He obtained the office again in 1956 during the uprising, which was crushed by collective intervention of the Warsaw Pact.
