Irvine Robbins grew up working in his father's ice cream parlor, and as a young man he went into the ice cream business with his sister's husband, Burt Baskin. They opened separate ice cream shops in 1945, and the two men reportedly flipped a coin to determine the order of their names after merging operations in 1945. In Baskin-Robbins' early years the brothers-in-law bought many of their malt-machines from a young salesman named Ray Kroc who, Robbins said years later, was intrigued by their pattern of selling their stores as franchises. With Baskin-Robbins' great success, Robbins had a pool shaped like an ice cream cone dug in his back yard, and a full-service ice cream counter installed in his kitchen.
His son, John Robbins, rejected the family business to becoma an advocate and author promoting vegetarianism. For many years father and son were estranged, but as his health faded the elder Robbins sought and followed his son's dietary advice. Irv Robbins' death in 2008 was marked with 31 seconds of silence at all of the chain's nearly 6,000 locations in 34 nations. Famed for its "31 flavors" (one for each day of the month), the company has cycled through thousands of flavors, but Robbins said his favorite was Jamoca Almond Fudge.
