Lawyer and cranberry farmer Marcus L. Urann developed a recipe for a cranberry sauce that could be prepared in very large batches and canned, and organized the Ocean Spray Preserving Company to sell it beginning in 1912. Sales of the cranberry sauce greatly increased the market for the fruit, and in 1930 he engineered a merger with his two main competitors to form Cranberry Canners Inc., a cooperative that soon came to include cranberry growers in Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin. The co-op was renamed National Cranberry Association in 1946, and after Urann's retirement in 1955 it was renamed again to reflect its best-selling product, becoming Ocean Spray Cranberries. Urann, who died in 1963, also founded the honor society Phi Kappa Phi while he was an undergraduate at the University of Maine in 1897.
