He removed early in life to Sandy Hill, New York, and was a member of the legislature of that state in 1806 and 1815-17, and of the State constitutional convention in 1821. He was elected to Congress as a Democrat, holding his seat in 1819-23, was chosen Lt. Governor of New York in 1826, and, by the death of Governor De Witt Clinton, became Governor in February 1828, serving until January 1829. He was afterward again in Congress 1831-33, and died in Sandy Hill, New York, on 25 May 1836.
