White is the author of the famous editorial, "What's the Matter with Kansas?" (1896), a title later used by Thomas Frank for his important study of modern conservatism from a nearly opposite viewpoint. Another editorial, "To an Anxious Friend", won the 1923 Pulitzer. Under White's ownership the tiny Emporia Gazette became internationally known.
