Suez Canal
BIBLIOGRAPHY
Canal connecting the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. The modern canal, constructed by Ferdinand de Lesseps, took 11 years to build and was opened on 17 November 1869. Egypt, under the government of Gamal Abdel-Nasser, nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, precipitating the threat of invasion by Britain, France and Israel. Lester Bowles Pearson steered a UN resolution allocating peacekeepers to the region, thus averting such an invasion. See Suez Crisis.
